Dialysis

When the kidneys can no longer function properly, harmful wastes build up, blood pressure may rise, and the body may retain excess fluid and not make enough blood cells. There are two main types of dialysis -- hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis -- both of which can be performed in the home. A doctor helps the patient decide which is best.

Hemodialysis, the most common method, uses a machine. Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of the abdomen to filter the blood.  You can be trained to use the equipment to administer treatment. Or, if you prefer, home health personnel can do this.
